Filoli Flower Show
Beautiful floral arrangements and magnificent table settings complement the splendor of the Filoli House and Gardens during their 21st Annual Flower Show, Kaleidoscope of Flowers, Mother's Day Weekend, Thursday, May 7 through Sunday, May 10, 2009. More than seventy floral designers will fill the House and Gardens with creative vignettes and colorful, bountiful flowers. Children's floral entries, garden art, educational and horticultural displays, and plant collections are also on display.

From Friday through Sunday, Filoli's wonderful greenhouse will be open for touring. Flower chats will be held each day at 1:30 pm on the Dining Room Terrace. Musical entertainment will take place in the House and on the Tennis Court.

Purchase tickets by visiting or by calling (650) 364-8300, extension 508. All proceeds go to support the preservation and conservation of Filoli.

Favorite or New Plant

Asparagus Fern
My friend Joleen gave me an Asparagus setaceus (A. plumosa) in a 6-inch pot. These are a vining form of asparagus fern and have very delicate foliage. The vines first appear as very tiny edible asparagus, but quickly shoot for the stars! I was lucky enough to plant mine in the perfect spot, but unfortunately, the landlord hates anything that climbs, so it's a battle of wills to see who will win -- the plant or the landlord. A. plumosa is excellent to use in flower arrangements and can be trained to cover a fence or trellis.
