Clever Gardening Technique

Tip Layer Fall Tomatoes
In fall we get another "window" of time where temperatures are right for fruit set on our tomatoes. However, by late summer our plants are looking pretty bad after battling diseases and pests all spring and summer. To quickly establish a new plant cover a section of tomato vine about a foot from the end of the vine. Keep the soil moist around the covered vine. In a few weeks it will be rooted and you can then sever it from the "mother plant", which is removed along with its mite infested, disease plagued foliage. Your new plant will grow quickly for the fall fruiting season.
