Guide to Trees and Shrubs
Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs, by Michael Dirr (Timber Press, 1997; $69.96), is a wonderful, no-nonsense book on identifying and using hardy trees and shrubs in the landscape. In his preface, the author describes the book as "a photographic essay that profiles and highlights the most common woody landscape plants adapted to the cooler environments of northern gardens." He adds that most species described in the book grow well in zones 7 or 8 as well. I found the photos particularly compelling; there are overall plant shots, plus closeups of noteworthy foliage, flowers, fruits, or bark.
