Clever Gardening Technique

Cover Vegetable Beds with Leaves, and Lots of Them
Once you've cleaned out your vegetable garden beds, pile as many leaves as you can find on them. I mean lots, like a layer 2 or 3 feet deep. Let the leaves sit over the winter -- they'll pack down to form a weed-suppressing mat. Next spring you can till them in or simply pull the loose top layer aside and plant through it. "Leaf mold" -- the dark, crumbly, broken-down leaves at the bottom of the layer -- is simply one of the best soil amendments around, and it's free. Your neighbors may be thrilled to let you take their extra leaves.
