Sunset Hyssop
Perhaps best described as a "hummingbird magnet," the sunset hyssop (Agastache rupestris) is a winner in my perennial garden. Clusters of tubular flowers resemble Indian paintbrush, but are much taller, with coloration of rusty orange, red, and lavender hints. Hyssop thrives in a somewhat dry, but very sunny location. It serves as both a background for the flower border, but can stand out in the middle of an island garden as well. This perennial will spread to 12 inches or more and reach a height of 2 feet. The narrow-shaped leaves have an aroma similar to licorice.
