Desert Landscaping: Plants in a Water-Scarce Environment
Desert Landscaping: Plants in a Water-Scarce Environment, by the Arizona Water Resources Research Center (1998; $25), is a CD-ROM that helps gardeners select from more than 600 low water-use plants. If you are planning a xeric or water-thrifty garden, search by plant name, compare characteristics of similar plants, and look at various landscapes using the plants. You can use the plant selector to click on characteristics you need, and the database will provide appropriate plants. The database covers plant size and growth rate, soil and sun requirements, irrigation needs, place of origin, allergens, wildlife interactions, color photos, and more.

Clever Gardening Technique

Shop the Thrift Stores
With the current status of the economy, shopping the thrift stores can be practical for the landscape and garden. You will find many unusual and unique items to add some interest to your garden and express your garden style. Antique bowls, wicker baskets, and galvanized containers will make interesting planters for flowers and vegetables. Boots and funky shoes are fun when planted with small houseplants like cacti and other succulents. Let your imagination run wild and save at the same time!
