Sustainable Farming and Gardening
First published in English in 1978, Masanobu Fukuoka's book The One-Straw Revolution: An Introduction to Natural Farming had a profound influence on me at that time and formed many of the beliefs I still hold today. Long out of print, the book was re-issued in paperback earlier in 2009 by New York Review Books Classics for $15.95. Wendell Berry writes in the preface, "Readers who expect this to be a book only about farming will be surprised to find that it is also a book about diet, about health, about cultural values, about the limits of human knowledge. Others, led to it by hearsay of its philosophy, will be surprised to find it full of practical know how about growing rice and winter grain, citrus fruit, and garden vegetables on a Japanese farm." Micheal Pollan has written, "The One-Straw Revolution is one of the founding documents of the alternative food movement, and indispensable to anyone hoping to understand the future of food and agriculture."
