Growing Bulbs: The Complete Practical Guide
Growing Bulbs: The Complete Practical Guide is a highly informative book and one I refer to often. It covers the basics of buying bulbs, soil preparation, planting depths and distances, and recommended planting times for 100 different bulbs. Growing Bulbs: The Complete Practical Guide, by Brian Mathew (Timber Press, 1997; $30).

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
It's pumpkin carving time! Rather than throw away all those seeds, why not roast them slowly in the oven for a healthy, happy treat?

2 cups rinsed, cleaned, and dried pumpkin seeds

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

half teaspoon salt

Optional: your favorite herb or spice, such as garlic powder or cayenne pepper

Remove the seeds from the pumpkin and place them in a colander. Rinse under running water, rubbing with your fingers to clean most of the pulp and strings off the seeds. A small amount of residue won't affect the taste, so don't worry about getting them perfectly clean.

Spread the cleaned seeds on a paper towel and blot dry. Allow the seeds to dry thoroughly.

In a medium bowl, mix the dried seeds with the oil and salt or seasonings, stirring gently to coat.

Preheat the oven to 300F. Spread the seeds in a single layer on a lightly oiled baking sheet. Bake at 300F for about half an hour, stirring every 8 or 10 minutes so they don't scorch. Bake until they are barely browned, slightly crunchy, and taste "done."

Cool thoroughly before storing in an airtight container.

Makes 2 cups.
