South Carolina Botanical Garden's Winter Lecture Series
The South Carolina Botanical Garden's Winter Lecture Series will be held on three consecutive Saturday mornings, February 13, 20, and 27, 2010, at the Strom Thurmond Institute at Clemson University. The series of lectures provides opportunities for gardeners, from novice to expert, to expand their knowledge about growing plants in the Piedmont. Fee is $12 per day, or $10 for Friends members. For more information call the Garden's Visitor Center at (864) 656-3405 or check the Web site at

Tool or Gardening Product

Radius Tools
I've long been a fan of Radius hand tools and pro tools -- ergonomic trowels, weeders, cultivators, forks, shovels, and spades with their curved handles and/or non-slip grips. Now, Radius has added a group of tools with extra handle length to reduce back strain. Of special interest to me are two new rakes, the Ground Hog and the Garden Shark. I'm using the Ground Hog as a clean-up tool and find it is especially useful in garden beds, where its rounded head reaches easily among plants. The Garden Shark, with its curved tines, is perfect for spreading mulch or soil. For more information, go to the Web site at
