Web Finds
Based in San Francisco, Orchidmania is a volunteer organization concerned about HIV/AIDS use orchid cultivation to support grassroots AIDS prevention and relief efforts. The information is practical and extensive, the photographs outstanding. The site is, as they describe it, "lame;" that is, a bit garish to look at and very wordy. Look through that and get to the information, and if you're of a mind to, check out the organization, too.

Favorite or New Plant

'Aloha' Tea Rose
Not a hybrid tea, but rather an old-fashioned tea rose, 'Aloha' is my ideal garden bed rose for cut flowers. Stiff canes on a huge plant that can be trained to climb, it has pinky salmon flowers that bloom off and on all year. It holds its own among other roses, but also makes a fine companion to shrubs. Cut long canes for the vase and 'Aloha' soon sprouts another. Cut this one back very hard in February and again in July. Glossy green leaves, no pests, 'Aloha' is a clear winner.
