Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council
This nonprofit's Web site is well worth your time and can be found by clicking here: FLEPPC. Whether you are already concerned about invasive plant species or not, this site will walk you through the issues of science, education and purely technical strategies. The site has Florida's lists, links to important studies, and the Homeowners Guide is a comprehensive look at what can be done in your own backyard.

Talking Dirt
Annie Spiegelman had me with this factoid in her new book, Talking Dirt: "One gram of soil may contain as many as 4 billion bacteria, 1 million fungi, 20 million actinomycetes, and 300,000 algae. Your soil is alive. So don't treat it like dirt." The book is subtitled Dirt Diva's Down-to-Earth Guide to Organic Gardening, and she covers the subject like mulch. She inspires and charms with practical advice from a very personal story of gardening. You'll learn a lot and enjoy the read, too. Available February 23 from Perigee, an imprint of Penguin Group, USA. $15 US, visit for more information.
