Brussels in Bloom
Brussels in Bloom shows a magnificent carpet of 1 million begonias in Brussels Grand Place. Stems tightly packed, 300 per square meter, directly onto the courtyard stone between rolled turf. No soil is used. (That's hard to believe, though the presentation is a brief two days!)
These pictures are from August 2008. This year's display will be August 15 through 17, 2010.

Mantis' XP 16" 4-Cycle Tiller/Cultivator
I'm adding the new Mantis XP 4-cycle gas-powered tiller/cultivator to "My Favs" list. This powerhouse is quite the pleasant surprise for those of us who struggled with the 1970s models. The Honda engine IS easy to start (on first pull!), even for me. It plows its way through clay and compacted and rocky soil, spitting out small stones. Large stones are easy to remove by taking off the tines. The engine restarts with a firm pull. I'm using it to till new beds and make planting holes for shrubs, including roses, hydrangeas and blueberries. What a back- and time-saver! The phone customer service is great too.
