Clever Gardening Technique

Summer Weed Control for Fallow Areas
There are many ways to control weeds including hoeing, herbicides and hand pulling. My favorite in the summer is to cover a future planting area with a light-excluding blanket. This can be a tarp, a section of densely woven black ground cover fabric, or even sections of newspaper covered with leaves or grass clippings. Once you eliminate sunlight from the weeds they will quickly die and decompose in the hot, humid summer conditions. When fall planting time arrives you can remove the tarp or ground cloth to plant or plant through holes in the newspaper. Note that bermudagrass and nutsedge are not effectively controlled by this cover and smother method.
