Soil Food Web
Teaming with Microbes, The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web by Jeff Lowenfels and Wayne Lewis
(ISBN 978-1-60469-113-9)
The title of this book should give a good idea of what it's all about. Teamwork with the microorganisms that are so critical in soil building is its essential message. This book has an amazing way of presenting the science of soil so that it is accessible to the occasional gardener who wants to grow without chemicals and the hard-core urban farmer. The authors have a friendly, amusing way of presenting the materials, making it actually fun to read about soil.

Favorite or New Plant

Skyrocket Juniper
This is not a new cultivar, but an indispensible evergreen for the landscape. with its beautiful blue-green color and a tidy, cone-shaped form. These junipers are beautiful accents between windows and actually perform well in containers. Their upright form gives a Mediterranean ambiance to the patio or landscape. Provide full sun and moderate soil conditions- not too wet not too fertile- and they will perform beautifully.
