Red Bird of Paradise
When it comes to hot weather performance and beauty, few plants can match Red Bird of Paradise (Caesalpinia pulcherrima), also known as Pride of Barbados. It waits until the weather heats up to take off growing, but then makes up for the late start with numerous bright red-orange bloom clusters at the end of each shoot that steal the show all summer long. Perennial to zone 8 if mulched in the winter, it is used as an annual further north. In the landscape it provides a tropical flair that is especially nice near a pool or outdoor patio.
