Rose Pruning Demonstration
On Sunday, January 16, 2011 (rain date is January 23), from 1-3pm, volunteers and local experts at the University of California Riverside Botanic Gardens will demonstrate how to prune roses, including hybrid teas, floribundas, miniatures and climbers. Started in 1975, the Gardens' rose collection boasts more than 300 rose bushes of various types from around the world, some dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, making it one of the most comprehensive public displays of roses in the Inland Empire. All of the roses growing in the lower garden are award-winners. Demonstration is free; admission to the Gardens is $2; minimal parking fee. For more information, go to

Glass or Plastic Cloche?
There is a difference between glass and plastic for greenhouses or cloches. Glass transmits 70% of the full spectrum of light, whereas plastics, even those used in greenhouses, transmit only 18-48% of the long ultra-violet rays that are a beneficial portion of sunlight.
