Freeze and Frost Data by State
The U. S. Dept. of Commerce's National Climatic Data Center has taken (most of) the guess work out of determining frost and freeze dates for spring and fall. This site contains freeze/frost probability tables for each state. For fall and spring occurrence dates and freeze-free period, probabilities are given for three temperatures (36, 32, and 28 degrees F) at three probability levels (10, 50, and 90 percent).

Merry Hall
Love of gardens, gardening, and caricatures are author Beverley Nichols' forte. Merry Hall is Nichols' cleverly-drawn, delightfully engaging narrative of finding and perfecting the object of his eye -- an English country house with one garden and potential for more. The time is 1946. The place, a Georgian manor house in Meadowstream outside London. Yet this could be my garden or your garden, with all the quirks. Nichols opens with "Some fall in love with women; some fall in love with art; some fall in love with death. I fall in love with gardens, which is much the same as falling in love with all three at once." Enjoy the latest reprint (1998) by Timber Press with Ann Lovejoy's forward. The original was published in 1951 by Jonathan Cape, London.
