National Institute of Environmental Sciences
Cautionary news about rotenone. On Feb. 11, the National Institutes of Health of the US Dept. Health and Human Services posted this press release: "NIH study finds two pesticides associated with Parkinson's disease.... New research shows a link between use of two pesticides, rotenone and paraquat, and Parkinson's disease. People who used either pesticide developed Parkinson's disease approximately 2.5 times more often than non-users." NOTE BENE: This study was done in the context of farming and health, not residential ornamental gardening. The study was a collaboration between the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the Parkinson's Institute and Clinical Center in Sunnyvale, Calif. For details, see Parkinson's.
