Favorite or New Plant

Northern Encore Tree Rose
If you want to try a tree rose in your garden, give the variety 'Northern Encore' from Bailey Nursery a try. It is rated hardy to zone 4 so you won't have to fuss over protecting it outside in the winter or bring into a protected area. It features two-inch diameter, soft pink blooms on a 4 to 8 foot tall plant. It flowers all summer and is disease resistant. Unlike grafted tree roses, Northern Encore is the same variety from root to shoot, so if it does die back, any shoots from the rootstock will be of the original variety.

Clever Gardening Technique

Wire Deer Deterrent
My fruit garden always seems to attract deer that nibble on the tender buds. I've discovered that placing sections of chicken or rabbit wire on top of the ground around the base of prized trees helps solve the problem. The deer don't like walking over the wire and getting tangled in it.
