Soaker Hose
This hose has holes, cautioned the store clerk before ringing up my black, sponge-like soaker hose. It oozes water; doesn't carry it, she added. I said, yes, that's just what I want for a newly installed garden. Placing soaker hose within a foot of each plant will bring water to plant roots, exactly where it's needed. Lay the hose out in a serpentine fashion so it reaches every plant, dig a shallow trench, slide in the hose and completely cover with soil and mulch. Attach a regular garden hose to the end, turn on the water, and watch the soil darken as the water penetrates.
