Replacing Lawn with Food Crops
Ideas for reducing lawn space are picking up steam, and in sunny landscapes vegetable gardens are a viable and enticing alternative. Food Not Lawns: How to Turn Your Yard into a Garden and Your Neighborhood into a Community by Heather Coburn Flores (Chelsea Green Publishing, 2006, $25) encourages home and community food gardens as a means to a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. Though the author makes no bones about her political views and perhaps digresses a bit too often, the book provides practical information on a wide variety of interesting and pertinent topics, from easy organic gardening methods to edible weeds.
