Open House at Plants Delight
Plan to visit Plant Delights Nursery and Juniper Level Botanical Garden, September 7-9 and 14-16, on the final weekends the garden will be open in 2012. Tour one of the most extensive perennial displays in the Southeast (featured in numerous magazines) and then purchase premium plants from the jam-packed nursery. The garden and nursery will be open 8 am to 5 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm on Sunday. Call (919) 772-4794 or visit

The Wildlife Gardener's Guide
If you're looking for ideas to turn your garden into a haven for birds and beneficial insects such as bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, The Wildlife Gardener's Guide by Janet Marinelli (2008, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, All-Region Guides) is full of helpful information. Beautifully photographed and user-friendly, the handbook is divided into 10 resourceful projects. Though the material is fairly basic, the guide covers all the vital information and offers some clever and engaging ideas too. My favorites include stopover gardens for migrating birds and container gardens for wildlife.
