Second Nature, A Gardener's Education
Second Nature, A Gardener's Education, by Michael Pollan (Dell Books, 1995; $14), is not a reference book by any means, but rather one man's spirited stories of his own garden and gardening. Pollan scrutinizes the world of gardening in a humorous, self-reproaching, witty manner and puts before the reader all manner of subjects, from the moral issues of composting, the naming of roses, and plant snobbery to the technicalities of a weed, the reasons for mowing or not mowing, and observations of a "green thumb." Altogether, this is a wonderful winter read for gardener and nongardener alike.
