Collecting Native Seed
Learn to identify native grasses and flowering plants of the upper South prairies and assist in a restoration effort at the same time. Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is planning to restore several old fields to native grasslands. Led by Margaret Shea, natural areas director, participants will collect seed on a 10-acre hillside prairie at Gethsemani Monastery on October 27 and November 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is free but limited to 25 participants. Mulled Herbal Cider
Add an herbal twist to mulled cider this fall. This recipe is great served with fresh apple cake or pumpkin pie and perfect for a Sunday afternoon fall garden party. It is adapted from The Herbal Palate by Maggie Oster and Sal Gilbertie (Storey Books, 1996).

Four 4-inch sprigs fresh rosemary

Four 4-inch sprigs fresh thyme

Four 4-inch sprigs fresh sage

2 quarts fresh apple cider

Combine rosemary, thyme, sage, and cider in a nonreactive saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove herbs and serve immediately.

Makes 2 quarts.
