Arkansas Herb Festival
If you love growing, eating, cooking, and decorating with herbs, consider attending the Fall Herb Festival at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas on October 5th and 6th. The festival features 2 days of seminars on herb growing, crafting, and cooking. Space is limited, so register early. The cost for both days is $75 or $40 for one day.

For more information, contact the Folk Center at (870) 269-3851.

Grandma's Okra
There are dozens of ways to fry okra, but I think the simple way is the best. Instead of using egg to get the breading to stick to sliced okra pods, my Mississippi grandmother taught me this no-frills method that yields soft tidbits of okra laced with a little crunch. It's still my favorite.

1 cup vegetable oil

2 cups okra, sliced into 1/2 inch slices

1/2 cup yellow corn meal mix

salt to taste

Place okra in a large bowl, sprinkle the corn meal mix over the slices, and toss with a fork. Heat oil over medium-high heat in a skillet. Using a slotted spoon, carefully place okra in the hot oil. Fry for 2 minutes, and then gently turn the okra. Fry 2 minutes more. Drain on several paper towels, add salt, and enjoy.

Serves 2 to 4
