Carolina Chrysanthemums
They're great in flowerbeds, but chrysanthemums also can be trained to tree forms, cascading sprays, and dramatic bonsai. Examples of these special mums will be on display at the Flower House at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC, 1025 Blue Ridge Road, on November 3 from 10 am to 5 pm, and on November 4 from 12 to 4 pm, compliments of the Central Carolina Chrysanthemum Society. The show is free.

Local Buzz

Boiled Peanuts
Boiled peanuts, long a regional snack of the season, have gone through some changes lately. In times past, the peanuts used for boiling were the "green" nuts that were too immature to store. Green peanuts are still used to make most canned boiled peanuts. However, the ones sold at roadside stands are fully mature raw peanuts, which are boiled for hours in salted water. They're not as slimy as the green ones, but if you warm them up a little they make a good stand-in.
