Taylor's Guide to Roses
Taylor's Guide to Roses, revised edition, (Houghton Mifflin, 1995; $18), is the perfect gift for the rose gardener who has everything (except this book!). This rose reference has it all: clear photographs that show the bloom as well as the leaves, rose anatomy, and everything you need to know to plant and grow good roses.

Pumpkin Cobbler
Tired of pumpkin pies? Want a different kind of pumpkin dessert this holiday season? Try this variation on the pumpkin pie with a crust that rises to the top during baking. It's a hit at my house.

2 eggs, beaten

1 cup evaporated milk

3 cups cooked mashed pumpkin or butternut squash

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup dark brown sugar

1 tablespoon flour

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ginger

1/2 teaspoon cloves

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 stick butter (1/2 cup)

1 cup flour

1 cup sugar

4 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup low-fat milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon sugar

Preheat the over to 350F. Combine eggs, milk, and pumpkin in a large bowl. Add the rest of the filling ingredients, mixing well. Set aside.

Prepare the crust: Melt the butter in a 9 x 11-inch baking pan. In another bowl, mix the remaining crust ingredients until just combined and pour into the baking pan on top of the melted butter. Spoon or slowly pour the filling evenly over the crust batter in the pan. Do not stir. Dot the top with the remaining 1 tablespoon butter and sprinkle with the sugar. Bake 1 hour.

Serves 8 to 10.
