All about Birds
Winter can be a great time for bird watching, especially if you have a feeder. Audubon Online ( is a super find for the whole family. This Web site has bird portraits, information on conservation, birds and science, kids and education, and more.

Plants That Poison
Plants That Poison, by Ervin M. Schmutz and Lucretia Breaseale Hamilton (Northland Publishing, 1989; $13), is a priceless addition to any gardener's library and easy to use. I like the plant illustrations with every plant description, in which the toxic parts are listed. Why the plant is poisonous and the symptoms of each kind of poisoning are noted. Other interesting comments are listed for every plant in the book. For example, did you know that powdered caladium leaves are used as an insecticide in the Philippines? This book and the number for your local Poison Control Center will help keep your family and pets safe.
