Hi,

My dogs ate a plant from a Bouq arrangement and I was wondering if you could ID the plant for me so I could check to see if it was safe for them to ingest please?

Welcome! I see a net in one picture. Was there a bloom on the ends of the stems? Could you describe the bloom? This would help to get an ID. Thank You!

Hi, thanks for your email...there was no bloom....one of the grandkids took it out of arrangement and left it in the car and I first thought it was a brush for pots and pans....it was just used for additional greenery on the bouquet I think....they just messaged me this very minute on Bouqs Facebook and said it might be green dianthus, but before that they said it was Palms and I think that was wrong (but I read that Palms was very toxic for dogs).

Is that what it looked like before the dogs ate it, or has it been chewed?

It was torn apart from the vine I think....I found it scattered around the back of the car and I am not sure how much the dogs ate.

It doesn't look like dianthus, and it isn't palm, is your dog vomiting? Any other symptoms? A lot of plants aren't poisonous to dogs, just give them a bad tummy ache. Once when my moms dog ate cigarette butts, my mom called the vet and the vet told her to give the dog ipecac . This made her vomit up the butts. You might want to call your vet just to make sure. I hope your dog is ok. Crossing Fingers!

Thanks very much....they are not vomiting and seem okay, but I didn't want to induce vomiting if I didn't have to because I am not sure which of the three dogs in the back of the car ate the plant if any or maybe they just tore it apart. But when they said it was a palm I got so nervous because of what I read online.

Glad they seem ok. Sorry I didn't realize you were talking about more than one dog! Guess I didn't read the question too well, and I knew you were distressed.

The plant reminds me of a cyperus papyrus a bit. I'm not sure if they're commonly used in bouquets, but they're becoming a popular plant in container gardens.
Maybe we should get a second opinion...

So THATS what it might be. Never seen it in pre-arranged bouquets, though. Is it poisonous to dogs? Good info for all the dog owners out there to have. I'm also thinking about another plant I have seen in those bouquets, can't remember the name of this one either,, old timers disease is a b...h. I am going to Kroger's, I will check out the flowers there and see if there are any fillers like this.

I actually grew this plant this year. Hilarious! It's a very well-behaved "grass". It can take bog conditions and remains strongly upright even after intense wind.

I can't find any specific info on whether or not it's toxic, but it's in the well-known sedge grass family, so I'm guessing if it was very toxic we'd know about it. Most toxic principles in a plant are concentrated in their stems or bulbs anyway, and a dog would have to eat a significant amount of that to reap the symptoms.
Maybe we should get a second opinion...

So right. I haven't been to Kroger's yet, very cold this morning and the wind is moaning around the corner of the house. A good day to stay inside, if you can! 27 for a low tonight. Gardening season is over here.

Since you mentioned dianthus, I looked and found one called "Green Ball" that is used in arrangements.
