I live in Nicaragua and there is a giant cactus tree near the Walmart here. I recently took a portion to plant at my home. What kind of cactus is this?? How did it grow so large??? It is the height of a telephone pole!

It reminds me of Euphorbia but I'm not all that familiar with them so I'm not sure which one. Here are a couple in our database but I'm sure one of our more knowledgeable members will be able to offer an exact identity for you.

Candelabra Tree (Euphorbia ingens)
Canary Island Spurge (Euphorbia canariensis)

I can confirm it is a cactus but I don't know which one it might be.

Awesome! Yes, a cactus. Having photos of flowers and fruits would help in identification.

I knew someone knowledgeable with cacti and succulents would be able to help! Thumbs up

We have lots of Echinopsis listed here in our database with photos for comparison:

Here's our database entry for the one Kelly mentioned: San Pedro Cactus (Trichocereus macrogonus var. pachanoi)

I think allot of information online about Nicaragua is wrong, if you go to the beaches and cliffs on the coast here in Nicaragua there are cactus that looks very similar to this growing everywhere in the wild, maybe one cactus every ten or fifteen square feet. In one spot, you may be able to see 20 or 30 of the same single column cactus growing scattered throughout the foliage and trees. Those cactus near the beaches look almost exactly like this except smaller and with just the height of a few feet. Specifically you see the cactus grow in the wild in the cliff areas on the pacific coast in Nicaragua

Thank you guys so much for your fast replies!!!! Very helpful information

Its NOT echinopsis pachanoi. Its not any echinopsis at all. I think this is some rare stenocereus and pachycereus species like stenocereus aragonii, which does those glauscent waves/streaks on the stem in the first image.

I believe it to be Stenocereus aragonii which according to some websites only occurs in Costa Rica, but others state that its range extends into Nicaragua. Looks like a decent match.

Edit: Stefan and I came to the same conclusion...
It is what it is!

Does it work that way? Don't you need to ask @Gull if they want their photos added?

Unless they have it blocked with admin rights or something , I dont. Most people dont care and dont bother to deal with the db anyway.
I upload (or rather mark for upload) plants to the DB i deem necessary. Since we dont have anything in stenocereus aragonii , i might as well do. Of course, they need admin approval before (usually zuzu) its official.

I would consider it a nice courtesy to inform the person whose photo you are associating with the database (which I suppose has already been done in a public way in this thread). This is just my opinion and not any formal policy. I have had to deal with members who were frustrated with database adds more than once and always ask for permission before taking that step. I find it a useful opportunity to explain to people how the system works and how they can opt out by changing their preferences.

I doubt youve been the victim of unauthorized(or at least in a sense) photo being made viewable online.

Im not upset that...you know, my photo is up there on google search. I am very upset however by the fact they chose those 2 awful photos in particular when they did...

Gull is new and didn't even manage to put the identifying watermark stuff into their photos. Sorry, Stefan but its not cool or appropriate to hijack photos. Just because it happened to you doesn't mean you should do it to others.

In how many of my photos do you see a watermark? There much in between in choosing a photo intentionally for the DB and popping up at random. Houzz doesnt even have a plant DB..

And besides, i dont make the rules concerning uploads. The site has that option enabled, and its meant to be used. I dont call the shots on what gets labeled, watermarked etc.

All members have the option to place a watermark on their photos or not but @Gull just joined the site yesterday to ask for an ID and likely doesn't know about that option.

Database photos can easily be deleted so, hopefully Gull will return and let us know if he/she minds their photos of Stenocereus aragonii being in our database.
