I have a very small yard, so I ony have about 9 TB irises, ranging in shades from burgundy red, to pink to pale blue, near-white and darker shades of bue/violet. I would like to add a light yellow or buff /white iris. Nothing chrome yelllow or gold, because I don't think it would blend well with what I have. So, something as bright as "That's All Folks" wouldn't be what I want.

I have been considering these: Bride's Halo, or Better Than Butter (rebloomer), or Yours Truly, or Overjoyed or Champagne Elegance, or Cotillion Gown, or Sweeter than Honey.

I've seen none of these in person, however. So I'd love some input from those of you who have actually grown these iris. Which ones of these do you like the best for the way they look, perform, and blend with other colors?

I have a couple of those on my wish list, but never grew any of them, so afraid I can't be much help, but I am sure someone else on here grow one or more of the irises on your list and can make some useful suggestions.

I only have Champagne Elegance, not sure I would consider it buff/yellow, more very, very light pink with dark orange/peach falls. It is pretty, but not one of my favorites. Mainly because seems when I get fall blooms, I probably won't get spring blooms. Just not the best bloomer in my garden. I have New Dawning that I think is a pretty, soft yellow. I also have Sky Hooks, it is yellow/white combo with blue horns, I have it planted beside Blue Reflections & think they look really nice together.

I used to have Cotillion Gown, but only for one bloom season. Had some pest and weather problems, and lost several dozen Iris of which CG was one. Liked it, though.



Colors can vary from location to location from many factors including weather and soil type. What is buff in one area might be light pink in another. The fun thing about Iris is if you don't like what you get you can always trade it or donate it and get something else to try.

Have you considered blended colors, and/or different classifications of Iris? I do not fertilize or give supplemental water and these all do well in my Dallas-area yard. Total Recall in particular--that one needs a LOT of room because it increases so quickly.

would a buff white iris do? This is my introduction "Marching to Zion" -- kinda a parchment white with buff midribs and hafts. Also it reblooms late October depending on your locale. Its a rapid increaser, so next season I could send you a couple of rhizomes if you were still interested

From your list - Brides Halo is a wonderful iris that can quickly become your favorite. It has been around a while so it would be less costly (say like $5-$8 for it)

grows well for me in my arid eastern Oregon garden and survived a prolonged sub zero cold event last year with minimal damage. The bloom is gorgeous, good substance and enough buds on the stalk to last awhile indoors

Thanks to everyone who has given input so far. I hope others here will add to it. I wanted to include that I think Lion's Share might be another possibility. So. I'm calling for more votes. Tell me which ones of the above you've actually grown and loved.

And I'm thinking Stolen Sweets might be yet another I should consider. So let's hear more about all the ones I have listed if you have grown them.

Forgot I did have Champagne Elegance. Was really pretty, but didn't bloom this year, so I think it is lost to either rot--or to accidentally sharing it all away.

It is a ferocious grower, very floriferous, blooms for a long time, and is bright and cheerful. I love it. It has never rebloomed for me, however. I recommend it heartily.

If you don't mind the lines, 'Fancy a Flutter' reads soft yellow.. It comes out a bit brighter, then fades..


One that knocked me out this year with it's subtle blend was 'Silent Screen Star'.


I love this historic I've had for many years... 'Spring Romance'..


but I don't think you could go wrong with either 'Yours Truly' or 'Bride's Halo'

...... another vote for Silent Screen Star -- it also has an unusual, sweet fragrance that's different than the "irisy" or "musky" scent most iris have

If you don't mind horns, the first "buff" iris that comes to my mind is Thornbird. It is a fantastic grower and blends really well with other iris colors.



Also on the space-ager end of things, Purr Form Mints is a beautiful soft yellow.



Of those you mentioned, I adore Cotillion Gown and Champagne Elegance is so pretty when several blooms are open at once. I also have Bride's Halo but it doesn't bloom regularly for me.

I agree the Bride's Halo is an ifie bloomer. I also have Thornbird and HIGHLY recommend it. It blooms like crazy and not all of the flowers have horns; which makes it more fascinating 😛

Toucan Tango has just bloomed in my garden and the red/purple streaks should blend beautifully with your existing irises

I have Thornbird too and I agree with Leslie and Greg. It is a good grower, prolific bloomer and just gawjus!

I have a TON of white iris clumps, I don't think any of them are TB irises though. They are really helping with the leftover space in one of my flower beds. So I just let them grow wildly. I do water them every once in a while during the summer so their leaves don't look scruffy and dry.

Ian, a word of warning, stay around on the iris forum and your "leftover space" will be filled with named varieties of iris in no time.
