A friend sent me this photo asking if I knew what it was.

The tree was in the Austin area in bloom this May.

He said the blooms were fragrant.

I have no idea on this ID. Can anyone help with what kind of tree this is?

It is too far away for me to tell, but Golden Rain trees are currently blooming here - a possibility?

I can't tell due to the distance shot either but my first though was that it reminds me of the Golden Rain Tree we used to have in the yard at our old house:

It does resemble that tree. Tell me, is the Golden Rain tree fragrant?

I don't ever recall fragrance with Rain Tree blooms, even when hundreds of them around town are blooming. Perhaps it is something else.

Goldenball Leadtree (Leucaena retusa) is a Texas native that has round umbels of fragrant yellow blooms from April - October; I can't tell from your photo if that might be a possibility but to my eyes, the blooms appear more like the Rain Tree rather than Goldenball Leadtree.

Another yellow flowering tree that (I think) grows in Texas is Jerusalem Thorn (Parkinsonia aculeata) but I don't think the blooms have any fragrance.

My Golden Rain Trees are at least mildly fragrant - sort of honey-like (to me, at least).

I'll venture a guess just from the general overall appearance as there are no real details to the photos.. Palo Verde. The flowers are slightly fragrant and the bloom time is right. It's used in street plantings. Zone 9-11. Cant tell from the photo if there is any green to the bark or not. Just a rough guess. edited to add an L

Thanks for the excellent help in trying to point us in a direction. I will show him these options and try to get him to confirm which one. He did look at the blooms up close and knowing that I am a plant nut, shared that photo when asking if I knew what it was.

@Silversurfer thanks for the attempt to right my photo. I tried also and finally gave up and posted it as is.

It may take me a few days to show this thread to my friend but I will let everyone know what he thinks.

Everyones' effort is appreciated. Thank You!

I'm not sure that it's a palo verde. We have them all over Arizona. The flowers and bark are quite different.

I was able to pull up all the links you folks shared and my friend looked closely at them. He had the photo on his phone and was able to enlarge it there as well.

His determination was that is was the Mexican Palo Verde Jerusalem Thorn (Parkinsonia aculeata) by the foliage as well as the blooms.

Although the consensus doesn't indicate that it was as incredibly fragrant as he had noticed. Perhaps more fragrant at certain times of day or in dry conditions. The fragrance was what had drawn his attention to the tree.

Once again, Thank You! to all for your assistance! It is always appreciated... Lovey dubby

Maybe it was something else in the vicinity giving off the fragrance? Green Grin!

I had wondered about that also but he said he didn't think so. It was in town and he didn't see anything else in bloom.

I was interested in reading about this tree but noticed it can be invasive in some areas.

Hi @Nicklovesplumaria, Welcome!

The plant trying to be identified here is a large tree. Since Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia rotundifolia) is an herbaceous annual plant, I wonder if perhaps you may have meant to identify a different plant on another thread?
