The pods are no where near drying out, it will be a few more weeks at least. I am thinking it is unique to African Queen but don't have enough of them for a conclusion. The color is actually a dark green but the sun was low and directly on them. Especially on the right pod, you can see the center ridge and its shadow. All of my other trumpets are either smooth or slightly squiggly in an irregular way.

I'm thinking it is caused by excess growth of the ridges. The skinny one on the left may be a dud. Both are open pollinated. Lots of 2n trumpets all around, maybe 50 or so counting buggy's.

My African Queen pods haven't done that in the past, but I am not sure mine are a true strain of African Queen as they are all the orange/apricot colored on both the inside and reverse.

The Lily Register describes it as apricot-orange and "outside with garnet-brown (HCC 00918) markings." In his book Ed McRae describes it with similar inner color and sofly colored reverse. The data base has a large range of colors. B&D claims theirs is grown from best selection of Copper King strain. I was pleased to get a couple of dark ones.

I expect there are fakes out there especially if it is traced back to bulk Dutch growers. It will be interesting to see what my pods look like next year. If they are normal then I will assume they are a fluke this year.

I'll have to see if I have any photos of pods with those traits. I have seen them like that on some of my Aurelians.

Just had the chance to check a few photos. I don't have any showing it to the degree shown in your (Connie's) photos, but I do have a couple of pods with a gentle wavy pattern on the ribs:

So I suspect Connie's example is just an extreme case, but I don't know what the cause is.

Hi All,
I discovered this forum looking up an answer for an iris question, and was very pleased to discover a place to show off all my flower pics, lol. These are from earlier this year, as all my lillies have gone to sleep.
