Hi everybody Hope you all have had a great year I'm finally getting some vacation days and wanted to share some pictures from My garden and friends on the West Coast hoping to provide a little winter entertainment for the next couple months Smiling

My Season was much improved over the past couple years although it still had it's challenges with weather we had 2 late freezes in April that stunted my 2 year plantings and lot's of the brand new seedlings and the entire bloom season was a record for heat upper 90's for weeks which made Hybridizing impossible but had lot's of flowers bloom for a change Smiling and I'll take that over everything else.

The West Coast gardens never disappoint they were incredible as always and I was in Awe of the new seedlings blooming and the improvements in form and new patterns that were popping up in there seedling rows. We will have a lot of good things to look forward in the future and many wonderful things being introduced this year.

A special Thanks to My Dad for letting me Pollen Daub in his garden and mark up his blooms with Tags without his plants to work with I wouldn't of had a fraction of the seedlings at home this year to enjoy as I had very little of my own bloom at home to work with in 2016/17.

The 1st to bloom when I got back from Oregon was 16-24A really liked the color combo and the thin rim on the falls it is very eye catching in the garden. I liked both of them and looking forward to seeing what they look like this year after getting established.

Next up was a Plicata Cross I did at Dad's have been hoping to work more Plicata's the past few years but not a lot of bloom to play with. One of my Favorite's of the recent Schreiner intro's is Petticoat Shuffle it is a neat pattern hoping I can put some ruffles on it Smiling Here is some of the things that bloomed in the cross as you can see it is a dominant pattern only kept a couple of them to work with but they were pretty especially so early in the season.

I have done a number of Crosses with Volcanic Glow in years past it has always grown well here and have been curious what the kids would look like this is the 1st batch to bloom still another 15 or so to bloom this year but it looks to be a fun parent Smiling and I'm looking forward to seeing what else blooms.

Hurray! I always enjoy your seedling show! Glad you had a decent bloom season. I love 16-24 B's form and color, really like the orange hafts and matching beard! Thumbs up
My favorite from the 16-104 cross is B. Great form, and like the colors especially the beard color makes it unique. I also like A for many of the same reasons.
I don't know why I never got Petticoat Shuffle. I see that Tom Johnson has some nice children from it.

16-18 C is my pick of this batch, like the dots, I like the colors in A

Brad ~ Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us your pictures of your irises, and of others as well. It does help to lift the "winter depression", to see more beautiful irises in the making. And thank your father as well. You are so lucky in that regard, to have a dad who has inspired you at an early age. He is generous in sharing his land with you in that regard.

I have to agree with a Rob on 16-24A and B! Lovey dubby Lovey dubby Lovey dubby

Brad, I can already see this is going to be another awesome year for your seedling pictures! Thank you again for taking the time to post these. I tip my hat to you. It's the highlight of my winter.
Both 16-24 A and B, are stunning with that black/dark chocolate color.
16-104A is my favorite of that group, followed by F (I like the distinct line going down the falls and up the standards).
16-18 C is a favorite of the third group. I like the blending of the colors and solid dark spot on the falls.
Can't wait to see the next group of pictures!

Another long term project is working with the Red's I have been crossing lot's of Joe's red's together trying to add more ruffles to them over the years two of My favorite's in his Red Line is (Marching Orders) and (Iconic) both have beautiful form and are fantastic in the garden. There are lot's of reds on the market today but only a few have been a real advancement in the form 2 recent releases from Napa caught my eye (Cherokee Blaze) and (Heart's On Fire) both are great if your looking for red's there Lovey dubby I recommend these 2.

I made this cross 3 times and everyone set a pod full of seeds Smiling had 20 or so bloom this spring with another 40 that should bloom in May lot's of good colors in this group but none had the (Marching Orders) form I was looking for that may change after established on a couple of them, some of these were hit with the late April frost so only saw a couple flowers Crossing Fingers! we get some more beauties. My teenage daughter was infatuated with M and already named it nodding always a good sign with my girl's Lovey dubby one of them.

Serjio.. Thank You glad you like the pictures it was a much better year for me and Oregon was Outstanding the year !

Lilli.. Thank You !

Tom...It was a much better bloom just wish I could have got some hybridizing done the heat just cooked them fast was disappointed I even had pollen from Oregon to work with and still couldn't get hardly anything to set Shrug! will have to make up for it in May.
Petticoat Shuffle is a good plant and the new ones Thomas named this year are even better it is a fun pattern and he is getting it in lot's of different colors.
I did a few different crosses with it in 2017 mostly with Keppel Plicata's and with Reckless Abandon out of Curiosity so hopefully something fun to bloom from that bunch in the spring.
Out of the seedlings from 16-18 my favorite this year was E it had great color and a nice branch

Rob.. 16-24A It was a good way to start the season Smiling Black Falls

Evelyn.. Thank You !! Im glad to help with the winter boredom and yes I am Lucky for him and Thankful he let's me work in his garden without his plants there would not of been many seedlings to enjoy.

Lucy.. Thank You I think Volcanic Glow is going to be an excellent parent.
Kieth has done quite a bit of work with one of the sibs.

Robin.. Thank You ! Im looking forward to the next bunch of them to bloom.

Daphne.. Thank You

Barbara.. I meant to get this going a month ago but our weather has been weird and probably a lot like yours we had high's in the 50's through Christmas and New Years and just a trace of snow until Saturday so stayed busy with work. Glad to get some downtime and relax lot's of pictures to come Smiling

Glad I popped back in to see the first of your seedlings, Brad.

I'm liking what I see..
16-104A is really nice.. did you cross one of Joe's with it. It's got better ruffles than the pod parent.
16-104E looks like it's hiding some berry pie under it's petticoats. Glad I took a closer look at it.. very pretty.
16-18A This one is all about the color. Wow!
16-24A. I like this one for the same reasons you mentioned.

After I look at them I find my favorites, then I go back and look again, and find more that I like. Sighing! My first glance at this new batch tells me that I agree with your daughter. 16-112M is great! Hope it has good bud count, branching and all the rest to go with it's great color and form. Sticking tongue out

16-103B sure has nice ruffled form, and I like the burnt orange beards with that color. Unique I think.
Many other nice ones here, though maybe not uniquely different enough, but showing good form. These can be used for crosses maybe.

If my memory serves me right, you usually show your pictures with increasing beauty as they progress. If that's the case, we are sure in for a treat! nodding

Good contrast in beard color on several of these Brad. That contrast stands out on 16-112 K and I am sure it does on others with more beard shots. Thumbs up 16-24 A also has a nice beard contrast along with substance and color. Remarkable. Lovey dubby
