@Lestv Being in Tidewater, is one thing , but some of the rainfall amounts were just a bit much. The name may as well have been changed to Rainwater, VA. I thought we were due for a little precipitation, so I moved a few seed trays under the eaves. I had to drain them 3 times, in less than 24 hours, so it was drenched at least over 4 inches, & that was under the overhang of the eaves!
If I hadn't drained those seed trays, they would have most certainly drowned. Meanwhile, Iris seeds are in baggies with perlite & have to make sure they actually stay moist enough, to prevent drying out, too much.
Then, with sudden deep freezes, after extensive periods of barely getting any frost at night, at all. This may be actually one of the warmest winters on record. It may be 40 today, but expect above average, all next week...& March is just around the corner. So, spring just may come early, at least here, anyway.
Sorry you had to endure the loss of so many Iris. That is unfortunately one of the least enjoyable aspects of gardening, when it is well beyond our ability to control...

Great pics, Leslie and Nancy! Welcome back to the Iris forums, Nancy! Welcome!

Leslie - So basically, whenever you breed two different types of iris, and it works and produces a child plant, that would be considered Species X?

Any way, I love Chocobeards and am beginning to want some of the non-bearded iris types of irises and Species X.

@UndertheSun Thank you. I simply forgot since yesterday (without having gone back to check) Just one of those things that goes along with aging...My memory just isn't quite like it used to be ! Though I do recall what the sunshine felt like in Tuscany , during summer. Just one of those quirky things about how memory. is stored & then goes through a cycle, of being "remembered."

Monty - In it's most basic terms, yes that is what makes a species X.

I have a NoID from Thelma's that was suppose to be a Louisiana iris. Since all her Iris besides about 3 LA's are bearded iris I am guessing that NoID has a mixed pedigree of species. It certainly doesn't look like an LA. Or a bearded for that matter. Foliage is much like an LA though.

I sure hope so too. And even if I can't get them all, if I have some to take with me wherever I go, I'll be happy. Thumbs up

I'll be working on finding a job and going to a community college soon, so that is a start!

Nice seeing everyone's favorites.. It reminded me of many I either love, or lust after.. I could probably pick ten from each section of the garden..but as Rob says... Here's my first 10 favorites Hilarious! (in no particular order)
'Tessie the Tease' was nearly solid blooms.. Very vigorous.
Thumb of 2019-02-13/Henhouse/2cc579

'Broadband' really made a statement..

Another tremendous bloomer..
Thumb of 2019-02-13/Henhouse/07a417

Sigh...

Heavily used in breeding, but beautiful in it's own right..

Packed with blooms...

Always good..

Someone recommended this years ago.. so glad they did.
'

Another heavy-blooming statement plant

I really like this combination..

That was just the first week of bloom that I went through... I pretty much like them all with less preference to reds (lots of exceptions though)...

Hope you get better soon, Richard.

It's interesting - I'm familiar with only one of the irises you listed, Cantina. I've grown it for several years and it performs well for me, too.
