Nah. Not near the coast. To go to the coast from where we live is 4-5 hours away actually. No sandy beaches for us. Rolling my eyes.

If you know where Roanoke, Virginia is, then you may roughly know there area I live in. Another indicator is if you watch NASCAR. Martinsville is a high name for that sport! Sticking tongue out

We're about 45 minutes from Roanoke, and 45 minutes to Greensboro, or Winston Salem.
The iris season has begun with Cat's Eye!

Oh boy! If you go at peak bloom Monty, you better bring someone with you to hang on to you by your ankles when your feet stop touching the ground. You'll have a sore face from smiling for a week afterwards.

Scott: Merit is amazing!!! I might have to add to my ever growing wish list. Also I had a hard time not including your Scotts Mystery Red(which was later identified). In the Top 10. I did think about it quite a bit as it was a big 2018 delight
I think the people who grow Irises are about as special as the flower itself!

Well, it was a very good year for dwarfs.

I will start with a few MDB's, which are so darn cute.

Beetlejuice

Tiny Beacon
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/bcccee

And I have to give a shout out to the largest MDB you will ever see - Pokemon. This one is an awesome grower and bloomer.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/3c759d

Lots of vigorous SDB's this year so picking 10 favorites is tough, especially since so many were lost to rain this summer.

I have a thing for Quench. Love it's slate blue color.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/76e0d9

I have a soft spot for Snow Peas (so green!):

There is everything to like about Morning Hues, which sadly I lost, but do have seedlings from that are growing. I have a new one on order with Rick.

And Mesa Sunrise: Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/08d393

Finally got to see the elusive Legolas, that took awhile to bloom, but did survive the rains.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/d48733

Flaming Lips - so very redilicious! Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/2c2309

And Giggles and Grins - R.I.P., not sure if it is replaceable. Coleman iris are so hard to get your hands on.

Leslie, can't wait to see you photos from the PNW! Take lots... and urge those folks (whoever they may be) to re-start their fall online sale! Whistling nodding

'Mesa Sunrise' is gorgeous... just made my wish list.

Elsa, good luck with your seedlings! I hope you get the outcome you want. I'd be happy to send you a piece of 'Merit' later this year. It originally came from Bonnie!

Scott: I would love that. And please find something of mine I can trade in return. Same old story. Usually only 1/2 of mine are healthy enough to grab an increase from but that leaves 275 to choose from😀

Leslie ~ You have a nice collection there of SDBs.

I especially like Pokemon, Rainbow Rim, Mesa Sunrise...oh, I like them all actually.

I am sorry for your loss of Giggles and Grins. If I come across it anywhere, I'll be sure to let you know.

Yes, 10 Burseens, and 10 other TBs. Smiling

Indeed, then you will be in trouble!

Just had a walk around of the gardens, filling dirt back in where the squirrels dug it out. Thumbs down Lots of new growth. The JI's are about an inch above the mulch now. Lots of fan growth on all the bearded. As Elsa said, amazing the changes that take place in the months leading up to bloom time. My TB's are looking the best right now. The intermediates and dwarfs don't show as much growth yet. Some of the new ones I got, that are still in pots are going to need to be planted before they bust out of said pots. And Grapenut, the only iris I left in ground in a devastated area of the garden, is enormous. Hope it is growing as well for those I have sent increases to in the past.

So Monty - looks like I will have lots of new iris to post pics of for you this spring. Enabling I will go! Hilarious!

My top ten in the IB, BB, and MTB range. They had a really banner year last year so deserve some love.

One of my very favorite first time blooming iris for me last year was the IB Sculptured Wild by Blyth.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/ba6095 Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/c97afd

Another favorite was Keppel's IB Moonglade. Lost this one, but have one on order.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/ab69cf

Blyth's IB With Ice has great green veining.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/5f055d

Another new one for me was the MTB Moose Tracks. What a cutie!
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/51a0ca Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/20123c

The BB Art Festival is always a heavy bloomer and a great grower. I recommend this iris.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/17807d

If you think there are lots of Blyth's in this list you're right. I actively went on a search for his intermediates. He has some really nice ones.
The IB Bounce is one of them.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/86c5d7 Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/9ebf22

I am so sad I lost this historic BB. I will get it again because I love it's stripes. This is Butterfly Baby.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/c2b634

The IB Eyedazzler was just that this year. Really put on a show.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/d14b3d Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/adf5f1

The IB Courtney Rucker is a great pink plicata. Another I recommend for strong growth habits.
Thumb of 2019-02-09/Lestv/59d303

Who doesn't love a Chocolate Fountain? Though this MTB doesn't look very chocolaty to me, I do like it's colors.

As to Eyedazzler - Not in it's parentage. Though it has luminata qualities it came from two plicatas.

Moose Tracks deserves all the awards it has been winning. Really stands out in the garden.
