I love anthurium blooms. Even though they are not showy like the andreanums (Flamingo flowers), species anthuriums are fun too.
This is Anthurium watermaliense, the 'black anthurium'. Jet black spadix, attractive dark striped spathe.
Thumb of 2019-02-28/Gina1960/cdeb8a

This watermaliense spadix has pollinating flowers (the tiny dots spaces along it...the pollen is the white powder)
Thumb of 2019-02-28/Gina1960/cbf6b7
This is the spathe and spadix of Anthurium vittarifolium. The spathe was pollen receptive (covered in a sticky secretion) so I took some watermaliense pollen and smeared it on. Maybe I will get seeds to try and grow out into a new cross!

I have never had this happen before. At least not that I can remember. I think its a rare occurrence...a double spadix in one spathe. There is an old one, and now a new one is emerging beside it! Anthurium schlechtendalii

This used to be a very rare plant, but it can sometimes be found on the market from time to time now that it has been cloned in tissue culture.
According to the late Steve Lucas, plant collector and scholar of all things aroid, this plant was hybridized by botanist Mike Madison at the Selby Gardens in Sarasota FL in the late 1970's. It is a beautiful little anthurium, leaves can be green or in several different stages of bronzy or tan coloration according to their age. The spathe and spadix is equally lovely in shades of rust, mauve and bronze. Anthurium radicals x dressleri

Gina, I love the interesting, twisting spathe on that Lasia (Lasia spinosa) you should add that photo to the database!

Thanks Lin! I will!
Take a look at these beauties from today!
The spadix on my big Anthurium spectabile measures 15 inches long! Its a monster.
Thumb of 2019-03-18/Gina1960/24bff8

This spadix on my Anthurium cupulispathum is producing pollen. I am always trying to cross my plants, but it seems I can never get a pollinating spadix and a pollen receptive spadix going on right at the same time. But I managed to find one of my much smaller Anthurium schlechtendalii's in pollen receptive mode...you can see some little flies on it lapping up the sweet sticky secretion, and see a little shininess. I smeared some of the orange pollen from the cupulispathum onto the schlectendalii. This may not be a plausible cross.....one is a climbing epiphyte and one is an epiphytic bird nest type. But it'd be cool to get some seeds to try! Time will tell!
