How To Deter Wasps

By virginiarose

I was doing some research about wasps last year because we had a problem with them building a nest under our breezeway. I found that if you make a fake wasp nest, it will keep them away because wasps are territorial and they will think the territory is occupied. All I knew is that it should be round and gray, so I balled up a grocery bag and covered it with weather resistant duct tape. I broke the hook off a coat hanger so I could hang it. It worked like a charm all summer: no wasps, no pesticides!

You could also find one of those hornets nests in the woods and varnish it and hang it up. My dad used to have one that he saved. They look great. It would be horrible if the hornets built a nest in our fake ones. LOL. That's the way my luck goes. No...my luck Japanese Beetles would breed in it and attack my roses from their battleship.

I'm using that one again this year! The weather proof Duct tape is tuff as nails. There is no getting in anyhow, they just look at it and bolt! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Can you design a Japanese Beetle nest for us? That's my number one enemy right now. They are attacking here like Pearl Harbor!

OH!! I hate them things. I did not have that many last year, thankfully. Green Grin! The worst thing to use is those bags, they will lure them to your yard and then they lay eggs there. So you end up with twice as many next year. The eggs are in the ground right? Have you tried the grub control, try to kill them eggs before they hatch and don't use them lure bags.

Oh good, is this the time of year you do that? I might want to put a little out my self as a precaution. Last year there were hundreds of them where I work and I go out to my car sometimes for lunch break and I sat and watched the finches catch June bugs and eat them! It was amazing, they would pound them on the ground then turn them over and eat them Belly up. Whistling

Yes, that woud be a good idea in the summer, especially after the flowers go to seed. I like to encourage them to eat from the shrubs and flowers. The yard should be a Habitat not a buffet, right?
