I was curious, and I looked in the database to see how many white selfs there were in there. 1,551! And every year new ones are coming out. They are all pretty, but how much more improved can they get?

Which ones do you have and what do you like about them?

I have a few in my White Flower Border.

I only have a couple white selfs.

I'll have to wait and see how they do, as I just planted them last year. I have quite a few on my possibilities list for this year's orders that I'm trying to narrow down for a moonlight garden, but normally we get so much rain and wind here in the spring that white flowers show every flaw that the weather throws at them. 'Lunar Whitewash' is a rebloomer, so it gives me a second chance at seeing some blooms that haven't been shot by spring rain and soil splash. I love that it was sent to me as a bonus from Aitken's after a conversation I had with Barbara about Innerst irises. A pleasant surprise.

I have a few. Most of them are white, but some do have coloured beards. Unfortunately, because most of them are all new, I can't say much about them.

Mesmerizer - It was planted in a relatively shady spot in 2018 and has sent up two, or three increases. I am really looking forward to this one inparticular.

Nordica - Of three rhizomes planted in 2018, one exploded in green (four or five increases!). The other has one increase growing, and the third I am only seeing a fan still. The third has had a hard time it seems.

Arctic Express - Two rhizomes. Both are doing well! A truck ran over both of the rhizomes along with a few noid others (and narrowly missed smushing several other ID irises). As far as I can tell, they seem to be rebounding. Do not know if any increases were lost.

Florentina (Iris Germanica) - The database says light blue, but I see more white than I do blue. Either way, this oldie has sent me up three increases. I am hoping to see it bloom!

--Not fully whites--
I'll include my own little snippet of "whites" that I have that aren't selfs.

Gay Paree - Of all the irises I have obtained, this is one I believe is one of my noids, which HAS bloomed. If it pays true, this cultivar has bloomed sporadically. Say, 2/5 years. I've transplanted a rhizome (noid) to a sunny spot in hopes it will thrive well. The ID version is next to....

Gay Pal - Which is another attempt to ID the noid. Based on the two database pictures, and the lesser known stature of this iris over Gay Paree, I feel that Gay Paree has a better chance to be the noid over Gay Pal.

There's quite a few white selfs or lightly splashed colours on white irises that I'd love to have some day. Probably the #1 spot goes to Immortality. I want to utilize the iris' reblooming ability if I can in crosses! Rolling my eyes.

Thank you for the thread, Evelyn!
TB 'Starting Fresh' blooming for me in May of 2022. It bloomed for a week and a half with nine buds.

Tough with big blooms. Definitely a favourite here.

Blue beards but classified as a white self. Has been moved around, so it did not bloom for me yet.

Beautiful with great substance.

Not a bearded, but I like it anyway! Big Grin

Great grower and bloomer - very hard to kill. Thumbs up

I did manage to kill this one, but the replacement appears to be doing well in its pot. Crossing Fingers!

Another old(ish) one, which has stood the test of time and will always have a place in my iris beds.

I have more 'almost white' irises, some on order:
Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Clouds Go By')
Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Heavenly Host')
Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Leprechaun's Trick')
Intermediate Bearded Iris (Iris 'Nevicata')
Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Queen of Angels')
Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Silverado')
Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'When Angels Sing')
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!

One white iris that just startled the heck out of me last season was Battlestar Atlantis. Rob gave it to me a few years ago, but it hadn't bloomed and I forgot about it. Then this giant white iris showed up - easily 42 inches tall! It was gorgeous. Hope it startles me again this year.

My favorite white iris recently was Ghio's My Beloved. I first saw it
as Best in Show at the Santa Rosa Iris Society event. It is vigorous, with multiple blooms and increases in my garden.

You didn't say bearded iris only, so my first white is the LA Acadian Miss. A good grower, blooms every year.

Historic Barbara Walther - just got last year.

SDB Blue Beard's Ghost, which unfortunately did give up the ghost.

TB Christmas Eve

Have this one, wish it would bloom....

The flattie Frosty Moonscape. Love this one.

Like almost everyone, I have Immortality, but this picture is much prettier than how mine usually bloom!

Does cream count because I love this Keppel IB:

Yep, have this one too. It is a great iris.

The BB Moon & Stars usually sends up several blooms.

I adore this Ghio, and wish I could get it to grow better.

The historic MDB Snow Maiden that grows the size of an IB:

My favorite white, Blyth's Sugar Bomb

I have a lot of newer whites that I haven't gotten to see yet. I find I like white iris more now than when I first started with iris. Many of my whites though have a little other color added, like Minnesota Nice, so I didn't add them here.

Immortality has not done well here so far. Going to move it to a new location this summer.

Emma's Laughter grows like a weed here, easily has 6-8 increases each year, blooms several times during the summer, and is planted in a bulb bed. Love it.

Several other whites are on their way.

Henhouse said:If I had to pick my favorites, I'd be hard pressed to do so... 'My Beloved' is close to perfection, and 'White Hot' has that fabulous beard... 'Coconut Snow' bowled me over when I saw it in bloom at Napa.. 'Lacy Snowflake' has been with me for over 25 years, so it holds a special place in my heart.. I love them all, what can I say?

beautiful whites, sherry. i especially love the whites with white beards such as 'coconut snow', 'quintessa', 'my beloved', 'matterhorn', and 'battlestar atlantis'.

i only have one that you own, the last, plus two others: ' cozy cotton', and 'free space'.

i love whites in large beds to cement/blend other colors together.
since i don't have large drifts, because of space, i have few whites. i would love to have more!

Barbara ~ I have learned that some irises that look absolutely white, are actually pale lavender or pale blue-violet... sometimes listed as pale blue.... If they look like they are white, then they should be listed as a warm or cool white. Although some warm whites look yellow, go figure! Rolling my eyes.

BTW, that is an awesome list of beauties! Lovey dubby
