Scape hunting reminds me of fishing. If I set for an hour and don't get a bite, I loose confidence and don't fish with the intensity I normally would. I began to doubt there are any fish in the lake or pond at all. But, once I catch the first fish all that changes and the intensity level really peaks.
So after finding the first scape I became more confident there might be others. Three of my Sattelmeir seedlings had several scapes, three of my 2017 seedlings had several scapes, both of my clumps of Pleated Perfection had several scapes, Heaven's Portals, and Petticoat Frills had scapes.

This has seemed like the longest winter, so knowing the
scapes are beginning is downright exciting. Can't wait to see blooms.

That is a beautiful seedling, Fred. Love the delicate coloring.

Whats funny about this thread is that, living in Denver, I've been snowed on in June and in September. Not in the same year of course. One early June we had purchased a new home and were moving in. As we went in and out, the snow fell. We were bummed. The next year, in September we had enough snow that the trees broke because they had all their leaves.

Of course, when we moved (in 1984) my husband was in Daytona, and I was in Denver with the house for sale. I had resigned so I wasn't working at the job I had for 16 yr. There was a hale storm that had baseball sized hale. I had friends at work who ran out to their cars with arms held over their heads. Arms were broken, windshields were broken, cars dented, and bodies too. Three blocks from our home, a creek bed that was always dry, overflowed due to hale and water, so homes near the creek were swept from their foundations. My realtor called and asked how much damage we had. I told her some of my roses were missing blooms. That is how freaky weather is in Denver. I don't miss it.

I lived in the Denver metro til I was 18. Always loved it. Summer afternoons that didn't drown you in sweat... warm winter days that melted the snow. I've lived in PHX and Lincoln since...

Only one thing I can say: there's weather everywhere you go.
Bravery is not being unafraid. Bravery is being afraid and living life anyways.

Diana, I loved it too! I grew up there. Just didn't know what I was missing. I never wanted to live in the East, but since 1984 I've been way, way East. When my husband introduced me to Florida, I fell in love. We've lived here a total of 25 years and still love it. Every place has it's good and bad.

I remember winter days in Denver when it was warmer than Miami. That is, one day would be warmer for 4 hr then everything broke loose.

Found a scape on Ruby Spider but the buds have been exposed to freezing temps too many times and the one bud that opened was a very ugly puny looking flower. It seems that there is always that one plant that 'jumps the gun' here and sends up a scape too early and then freezes off. I sure hope that it will send up more scapes this year. Crossing Fingers! At least it's a sign that the season is starting. Hurray! Hurray! All of my daylilies are now actively growing and I am happy that I have not lost one of them over the winter. Even my seedlings have all come back and are doing well thus far. Really excited about that and should get to see their first blooms this year. Big Grin I hope everyone has a great bloom season this year and can't wait to see more pictures to drool over!

Found a scape this morning on Water Drops that is just starting to form. It's in a protected spot and has a ways to go, so hopefully weather will cooperate and the buds won't freeze and come out funky like the one on Ruby Spider. Crossing Fingers!

The first scape of the season morphed into the first bloom of the season. This is not an April fool's joke. I thought it would open yesterday, but nope, just had to open in April!

Here is ORANGE SPICE Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

First scape of the season on Lovely and Amazing, a bonus plant from Wynn's. It looks like I'm at least three or four weeks away from a bloom.

Found my first scape of the season on Dumortieri, several just barely showing. I used to not see scapes on any other daylilies until Dumortieri finished blooming, but Fern stone should show scapes just about the time D starts blooming.
