This is a new hosta this year. Sagae. There are several other new ones in the same area, but this is the only one with damage.

I have not seen any slug "trails" any where around it. I am not a hosta expert - but have grown them for about 20 years. I don't recall ever seeing damage that looks like this.

I was thinking slugs eat smaller holes, not huge chunks.

I have looked all over the ground, leaves etc. and can't find any caterpillars or any other sign of any pest. My dog did find a rabbit nest 20 feet from this plant, but it does not look like rabbit damage to me either.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

You were right! I looked up cutworm. I did not know what they looked like. Thought they were pretty large.

So, went to look and sure enough, when I scratched around in the soil, I found several. Grumbling

I'll take a flashlight out as soon as it cools off so I can really see under there and hopefully get all of them.

If I don't get them all - Anyone have luck with diatomaceous earth? I know I have some of it already.

Since I just got this plant a couple weeks ago, and have no other damage on any other hosta around the garden - or any other plants - I think it came with the hosta. I got the hosta locally where they dig them up and put in a plastic bag while you wait, not at a "regular" nursery, or in a pot.

OK.

Well, in the couple days that it has been really hot and I have not been out - yikes - I seem to have these things in multiple places. One of my pulmonarias is perhaps 2 feet across, and the leaves are nearly down to the veins. I found several caterpillars or worms on them - not sure if it is same thing. Found them in other areas too. Even on my witch hazels.

Went to look for the D.Earth and I can't find it!! I do have Sevin though. Will be a lot cooler tomorrow, maybe rain. So will do it tomorrow night after the rain passes through.

Thanks so much!
