Fires in Napa and Santa Rosa, wineries, houses burning. We're about an hour and a half drive from Santa Rosa. So far, just smoke.
It's so wearying to just think about having to evacuate. We just watched some youtube footage of today's fires. So scary.

We've started to think about what we'd take if we had to leave.Thinking about where we stored the cat carriers, things like that. We do have a big van that we take to craft fairs. This stuff is getting old ! And no rain predicted until November.

My SIL and BIL live outside Calistoga at the north end of the Napa Valley. They lost several pieces of farm equipment and some grapevines. Fortunately, their house is still standing...so far. Crossing Fingers!

I'm debating posting an article that was in the Paradise newspaper. Paradise is where the Camp Fire was in November 2018, that destroyed about 20,000 homes and killed about 90 people. It's about a cattle rancher that lost so very much. It's a tear-jerker.

I am just wondering if others in our zone are having blooms right now? I have three blooming and it seems odd.

This is Wine Time, it's had three stalks up since third week in November.

Doe z Doe, various plants blooming since September.

And now Baby Bengal.
Not the best of blooms but pretty good for weeks of frosty nights.
Anybody else's plants mixed up like mine?

Gretchen, I looked today and didn't see anything in bloom. Not even my Baby Bengal. The first of November I did have two irises bloom.

This is a very nice Christmas gift.
I think the people who grow Irises are about as special as the flower itself!

Yes, nice gifts, but I'm wondering about just cutting off the bloom stalks so the plants have more energy for their increases. It looks difficult to manage both at once and the blooms are mangled by the cold anyway. What does everyone think?

Here is just my 2 cents: It takes energy to form a bloom, and it takes energy to form the seed pod and seeds. If you deadhead now, you MIGHT "save" energy by preventing seed pod formation---but I don't know if these cultivars readily produce pods or if you have any bee activity right now. Probably not, so I suspect you would not "save" any energy if you deadhead.

Maybe if you discover a pregnant fan beginning to form, you could save energy by removing the developing stalk. But I think I would just leave the plant alone and just enjoy the flowers that develop. I cut some stalks that formed buds this fall, and I brought them inside, and most of the buds continued to open---I don't recall any frost damage! Smiling

I am not a fan of re-bloomers. I don't see the appeal of having iris bloom in weather so cold that I can't enjoy them. I had one yellow re-bloomer (NOID) turn out blooms late this fall. I think only two blooms made it before the rest were destroyed by frost.

I would at least remove the spent blooms so that they don't put strength into producing seed pods and seed. I may actually dig out the entire plant next spring because I know I've never ordered a yellow iris. This was one of the numerous mis-labeled or unlabeled irises I received from a couple of smaller iris nurseries. I will never order from either of them again. What a waste those two years of orders turned out to be! So much lost time!

Well, I went kinda half way. I cut off all the blooms☹️ that looked sad and shrunken. Which was most. Maybe the rest will be better that way. Some seemed to have spots of mold or fungus and I got rid of those. Thanks to everyone for advice.😉

BTW:. None of the three are known to be re bloomers. However, two of them are "survivors" of my 2019 spraying with Equinox at bloom time that just about killed every rhizome I had. I just think the plants are trying to re-group. Wine Time was a 2019 plant that is re blooming and putting out LOTS of increases as well.
