Late Tuesday night I had to call 911 because my husband was experiencing extreme dizziness and upchucking. It was extreme. My friends at the firehouse came in their EMT truck, loaded DH on a gurney and took him to the hospital. I followed in my car. The firemen were outstanding--they did EKGs, hooked him up to a drip system and successfully stopped the vomiting. I arrived at the hospital at 12:47 am and it was 2 hours before I could join him in his temporary room. The doctor told him it was vertigo and released him about 4:00 am and I drove us home. We were still loopy after 4 hr sleep. But last night for me was 12 hr of sleep and I'm recovered. It's going to take DH a couple of days to shake that tired feeling. He did go to our GP this morning. The doctor was amazed that he was in such good shape. Of course, the Spring RodRun at the Daytona Speedway is this week .... we'll see how DH is on Monday. Hope it doesn't over do it!

First time ever to call 911 and DH's first trip in an ambulance.

Arlene,
You can get some over-the-counter meclizine (sold as "Bonine", "Dramamine Less Drowsy" or other brand names). If he starts to get dizzy, pop one down him before he gets to the vomiting stage, so it will stay down. That should get him through watching the races if he's not fully recovered by Monday.

DH has had bouts of vertigo and hates it. He quit drinking coffee in the morning because he thinks it makes a difference. So far he hasn't had any more bouts.

Mary, my first thought was food poisoning! The dinner I served wasn't one of the really good ones. We both ate it and ...... look what happened. Oh boy, we are both sleeping like some logs. I must have been more stressed than I thought. He's doing really well.

The RodRun at the Speedway is a big car/parts show. Shouldn't be too dusty. Last weekend DH was at the Sebring 12 hr race and that's when it started. It was very warm and very dusty and his sinuses flared up significantly.

Thank you, Diana. Medical people (and a pharmacist) all mentioned that this med could be purchased over the counter, but no one told us what to look for. I'll find it and keep some in the medicine cabinet. It's scary when a person can't stand up due to vertigo. We've never experienced it and hope we won't in the future!

That sounds very scary, glad they figured out what was happening. One of our sons had problems with vertigo for some time it was caused by an inner ear problem.

Arlene,
You're welcome. Look wherever they keep the stuff for motion sickness. You may want to bring some along on car rides too.

Vertigo is usually an inner ear problem brought on by an upper respiratory viral infection or allergies. Sometimes decongestants and/or antihistamines can help by reducing swelling and inflammation within the inner ear.

Ginny, maybe your DH is allergic to coffee!

We woke up to this sight across the river this am:

I called our local dispatcher (we are still working on getting 911) to make sure it had been reported. It had, but they were still trying to find out who owned the "residence". I hope it was empty.

The smoke is less, more centralized and going straight up now. Looks like a lull in the wind is helping our volunteer fire fighters. Thank goodness - it is a wooded area with several more homes nearby.

The fire across the river got put out, but the wind changed, and all the smoke dropped down into the river valley.

An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly."

The other man said, "What is the name of the restaurant?"

The first man thought and thought, and finally said, "What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know, the one that's red and has thorns."

"Do you mean a rose?"

"Yes, that's the one," replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?"
