Hello, I am a new member to the site. I love your podcasts and plant database. I am in zone 6b so gardening can be a challenge. I have a bulb that I am not sure of. I didn't plant them but they come up every year. I think it is some type of hybrid tulip but I am not sure what kind. Can you help?

Thank you. Jeff

Think its this: Tulipa humilis

Species Tulip (Tulipa humilis var. violacea 'Black Base')
Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.

I think it looks more like Red Emperor. Compare the pictures on the data base.

Hi Paul, Thank you for the information. The distinctive yellow band around the black base indicate my species is indeed the Red Emperor or (Madame Lefeber). Thank you for your help. Jeff
