I have been lurking around this forum for a while now and finally decided to join Smiling Such a great community!
We moved into our new house about 6 years ago and I have been ordering and planting lots of irises. I always picked named varieties, but when they bloom, it turns out that most of them were mislabeled... It has been fun trying to id them, but I still have a few unknown ones.

This is the first noid to bloom this year. It is early, tall and has a slight fragrance. Another picture from last year:

Any help would be appreciated! Also if someone could give me some advice about using the plant database - there are so many options that it's overwhelming. I either try combinations that result in nothing or too many varieties...

Welcome! to the forum!

That is a really neat looking iris and I love it's beard. It has an older form, but the form also may be because it is a species X or has some arilbred in it. Wish I could be of more help. Hopefully someone may recognize it.

You can narrow down some of the database by using the Iris Database. Then if you want to find something by color, or type, or by hybridizer you can do the "Search by characteristics." Also in the iris database (but not the general plant database) if you don't remember the whole name you can start typing what you know in the "search iris" box and it will start displaying a list of iris with that word in it. For example: If you type the word "Cool" it will show all the iris with Cool in their name. The top ones are ones that start with Cool, but later entries show iris with Cool as other than the first word (such as Totally Cool, and also ones like Wine Cooler). Not sure if any of this was what you were wanting!

Welcome! daredra,
I don't know the name of your iris either, but your photograph of it is fantastic.

Welcome! daredra,

The first iris that came to my mind was Gnu Blues. I've had a look at the photos in the database and I think Gnu Blues is a possibility

The only way to identify an iris with confidence is to purchase the iris you think it may be and then compare them when they bloom to ensure that they are the same.

Thank you, Robin, Gnu Blues looks like a very probable candidate. I did purchase Sugar Blues at the same time (none of them turned out to be Sugar Blues), so might be a similar name mix-up. At least I have a lot better idea now.

And I will keep playing around with the database, thank you for the pointers, Leslie!

I will be back when my other noids bloom! :)
