Is there a quick way to copy a photo which allows for sharing (along with the photographer's credit) without first downloading it to your hard drive? Sometimes I have time to just update the database a bit and adding in photos seems like an enjoyable pastime.

I am missing something. I open the database and locate a plant with no photo. I go to Creative Commons and search for a nice photo. Found one. Right clicked and chose 'copy image'. Back to database entry, click 'upload a photo'. Then I am lost. I don't see the option to upload a URL photo - where is that? Thanks.

Sue said "copy image address," not "copy image." It might be worded differently on your device. On my PC it says "copy image location."

OK, getting closer. So I now chose 'copy image location' from Creative Commons. Go back to this site and open the plant entry, click on upload a photo, then still lost. I don't see any reference to a URL by either clicking or right clicking on 'upload a photo'. What am I (still) missing? Apologies for being a bonehead...

Deb, do you have this option when you go to a plant entry in the database?

No. My choices are: upload a photo, post a comment, add an event report. When I click on upload a photo, the only choice is to upload an image. I wonder if the URL option is limited to moderators/admins? I opened the same database entry you screen shot.

Hey, don't feel bad, Deb. I don't have that option either and I'm a mod and an admin. Big Grin

Unfortunately it sounds like there isn't an easier way for you to submit CC images to the database without downloading them.

You could try this, though: click the normal "Upload a Photo", then click the "Upload an image" button. When you get the window to select the photo, instead just paste the URL of the image into the "Filename" field and click "Open". Depending on how your system is set up, this might automatically download the image for you and then start uploading it to garden.org, rather than you needing to do it manually.

Nope. I just tried that and it didn't work, Joshua. Could it be a special setting Dave gives you on request? I've never needed it because I only add my own photos to the database.

I think the "Upload a URL Photo" must be a special setting, Zuzu.

If my suggestion didn't work, though, I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Pity. I was hoping for a quick and painless way to import photos direct from the internet particularly for plants with no photo. To first load to my computer, then add to database, then go back and delete the photo from my hard drive all sounds like something I likely won't bother doing. Shrug. It was a good thought. Maybe the owners could add 'import a URL' as a universal option, since it apparently is available to some folks.

I've been having trouble figuring out how to do this to and just tried saving a creative commons image to my desktop and uploaded it to the DB. I hope someone can check it out for me and see if I did it correctly. I copy/pasted the wikipedia commons info in the caption section.

Looks like it came through fine, assuming you are talking about the water lily. I wonder about the watermark, though - kind of odd to have your name attached to a photo someone else took. But, small potatoes. So, I assume from your post that you had to first load it to your computer, then load to the garden site -- is that correct? If so, you are a better person than me. That is just way too much monkeying around for me.

Yes, I saved the image to my laptop and then uploaded it to the database. In the caption bar, I pasted the creative commons address but I failed to read the information on the page where I found the photo and omitted listing the photographer's name. *Blush*

I've submitted a proposal to delete the image. I don't think I'll be uploading any more creative commons pic's, I'll leave that to those who are more tech savvy. Smiling

Yes...the 'upload from url' is an option that only a few of the plant admin team have access to.

Well Zuzu should have it. I've always had it so thought that was standard for everyone.

Deb, you need to turn off your watermark when you upload photos that aren't yours.

I never use watermarks. They annoy me.
