It is late August in zone 5. ( Chicago southwest suburbs Close to soybean farm ). I spread liatris seed last year . I have a 12 inch weed and can't tell if it's liatris or horse weed. Any suggestions or sites that can help me distinguish I would hate to pull it prematurely if it was liatris spicatica.

First picture - Horsetail.
I've got a plague of them here. If I see one in the garden, I drop everything to go pull it. And just when you think your rid of them - there's another one growing among the lilies - as if to say "I'm beautiful, too".

First photo is Marestail (horse tail). The second looks like Liatris. You will know when they bloom. Smiling

That's the problem with common names.
The weed is commonly called Marestail and Horseweed.
Horseweed (Erigeron canadensis)
