I was going through my seeds today that I harvested, putting them into individual bags and then in bigger bags by color group. When I got to the red ones, I did one for what I call "bright red" and one for "pinky red". Of course I don't know what color the seedling will eventually be, but I'd give it a good guess unless I happen to cross one of each color of red, then it's a wild guess!!!

I had wanted Talladega the first season it came out, really wanted it. After seeing the garden photos ofit, I decided I still wanted it, but would wait to the price decreased a bunch. It's a beautiful daylily but it sure taught me to look at the descriptions of daylilies and not just the photos.

Many of my daylilies here bloomed lighter than they were supposed to be because of the triple digit temperatures. After we had a few cooler days and some rain, the blooms started looking more like the hybridizer's photos. My BAJA CALIFORNIA is finally the right colors, although not as intensely colored as Trimmer's.

That's a great bloom on BC. I would be tickled pink to own that one but it'll have to wait a year or two for me. Sure does give me a lot of hope for the seeds I bought from Dot. Maybe I'll have one that looks close to that or even better!!! One thing about seeds, you never know what you will get. I'm a gambler, I love to look at the parents and try to guess what all different looks I might get. Thanks so much for sharing your photo. Be sure to put it in the database, please!!!

These flowers gave me a consistent 'finished bloom' look.
Jennifer Trimmer, Wonder of it All, Calamity Jane, Happy Happy,
Italian Kaleidoscope, Prissy Girl, Moment in the Sun, Across the
Universe, Bella Sera, Dovealicious, Linda Beck, Lady Betty
Fretz, Shipwreck Cove, Walter Kennedy, Written on the Wind, and Memphis.
All these were their recognizable self even with the harsh climate
conditions. The ones of these that I had last year did much better
last year with the frequent rainfall, but continued to be beautiful this year.

Storm Shadows was a welcome surprise this year, even in a
bad season. It finally matured and was so beautiful, in color and form.

Born to Run, Tropical Hot Flash, Dove in Flight, and Glamoureyez
have a pale phase here. They begin bloom in rich bright colors, then
change to pale.

I'm hoping that Baja California will improve some by next year. It was a huge fan so it should have looked it's best, but it didn't.

This is about the best it looked for me.

This is a great thread that I just caught up to. Each to their own on taste, but Baja California isn't a daylily that appeals to me from the pictures I've seen of it in people's gardens. The one I'm most interested in that's still up there in price is Parrots of the Caribbean. Most of the garden pictures I've seen of it show it as colorful as the hybridizers picture. However, (and here I hope I don't rankle any feathers), if that color only holds for a couple of hours in the early morning, I will feel cheated. I'm paying for a DAYlily, not an HOURSlily. Faders are one of my biggest pet peeves. Now I'm not talking about a minor change of color, but when bright yellow fades to white, or purple bleaches out to blah by 5:00, I'm a little ticked. For my hard earned money I want a colorfast daylily that looks good all day, or at least a caveat from the seller that it requires a 6 AM wake up call to see its fleeting beauty or a shade cloth or a greenhouse to look like the colorful photos he's posting along with his $150.00 price tag...And one other thing, I've read some posts about Linda Beck which was a new one for me this year. Unfortunately our 100 degree days hit just as it started blooming, and while the color held fine, the petals lacked substance and were a little floppy. They didn't melt at least, so I'm hopeful for next year as the plants matures. I had it in late afternoon shade btw.....Maryl Thumb of 2012-07-25/Maryl/d62951

This is Small Carbon Footprint, taken in the evening, after being out in full sun all day, and no shade.

And yes, it was melting hot out. I will admit, that after a few days of temps being more reasonable, that the colors on all of my daylilies are more vivid.

I tend to notice the melding of colors on the blues. And yes, some of my purples and reds seem more affected than others. But others, are incredible - like Red Volunteer. This was taken tonight, in the evening, and it was 100 degrees today, and no shade.

But you are correct, when spending that much money, one wants the color to at least be somewhat stable. On the other hand, this is an exceptionally nasty summer for heat, sun & drought. I love my ones that have stayed vivid, but I will allow excuses for those that can't this year. Heck, for some, I am just happy they are still alive!!! ~Jan
