My Daylily has bloomed. Now on the scape I have a new little daylily plant (I have two scapes that are doing this).

What is this called as I have never seen this before? Confused Confused Confused

It is called a proliferation and can be potted up and you will get an exact copy of the mother plant!!!
How I do it is to cut it about an inch under the prolif and an inch above and then stick the bottom into soil just until the bottom of the proliferation touches the soil. The inch of stem helps hold it until it roots. Cool way your garden gives you free plants. I only got 3 this year but consider that good since the daylily year was sort of blah in the heat.

Thanks Michelle -- Interestingly enough the daylily that did this is my Avatar and it is an unregistered unnamed little guy! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! I will do that and see what happens! Thanks! I tip my hat to you. :tiphat:

We get a lot of prolifs here and alot of times the prolif will send up a scape and start blooming on the original scape before I cut it and plant.

2 of the plants you sent me had one. Ledgewood's Firecracker and Ledgewoods Pansy Eye. Both are rooted and growing and I have extra fans now. I never had them before and don't know if I will in this area so was really pleased to see those. Thanks Tink.

I haven't seen any prolifs this year. It's been a strange summer.

That was a very good explanation of how to handle a prolif. I'd been told several different ways over the years and none worked so I gave up. This sounds very simple. How soon do you cut the prolif? Would you do it in this heat or wait until the soil cools down in the fall?......Maryl

I usually wait until the scape turns brown underneath the prolif or when I see roots developing. I haven't had one bloom on the scape though like Michele, so maybe I do it too soon.

Make that 5 prolifs for me this year. 2 on one plant that I have already cut and planted and 3 on another, a spider seedling. I noticed today that it's putting out 2 more! The whole scape is still green and I've already harvested seed pods from it. I think I like it. Hurray!

you probably aren't taking the prolifs too soon if the scapes are brown or there are some good roots. Not all of mine will scape before I take them. The ones that are scaping, the scapes they are on are still nice and green. Then I have the ones that are all brown and dying before the prolif gets roots. I just plant them anyway, they may live and they may not.

I just posted on another thread looking for this answer. I had an unusual amount of what you call Prolifs this year. I think I planted a dozen or so and planted them correctly according to you all. So they will grow up and become big girl Daylilies? Thumbs up

Hi Cheryl, yes they should grow up to become big girl daylilies. Sometimes they don't make it, but usually if they have some roots coming off of it they will.

Thanks, Michele. They get plenty of water and some sun to start off with but we are really hot in August. I wish them luck!

I did what you suggested, and my prolif baby is doing well! Last year, none of mine survived (only had a couple) I think I have a couple more coming, too soon to tell yet. ~Jan

The one I did (it was on a seedling) didn't even have roots visible - I just snapped and planted, and kept it watered well for a few days ~Jan
