The mention of Scale on plants is not a good thing. In many varieties of Bromeliads scale (non insect) form striking silver bands and overlays on the leaf surface and/or the undersides.
This is your opportunity to share the beauty of scale on your Bromeliads.

Aechmea 'Fasciata' gets it's nickname 'Silver Vase Plant' from the heavy silver scale banding on reverse and upper leaf surfaces.

Careful when handling as the scale can be accidentally scratched.

Leaf partially wiped clean of scale showing glossy green leaf that lies beneath.

Interesting! Now I am going to have to go out and look carefully, up close and personal, at the broms. I certainly never knew the color of the A. Fasciata could be rubbed off. Wow, don't tell Lowe's or they will be inscribing holiday messages like Happy Valentines Day on them.

Ok, I took a few pics for ya. I have a few plants with the white banding scale.
Aechmea chantinii, you can see where I scratched some off.

Aechmea Vaquero, I would say this is scale? It's subtle but it does scratch off. Young plant, should really color up as I move it into more sun.

This is a Billbergia, Muriel Waterman, quite a few Billbergias have the white banding.

Another A. chantinii with heavy scale.
